We do not place volunteers in the communities we work with.

Fieldstone does not place volunteers in partner communities. Every role below is remote, skilled, and supports the organisation rather than substituting for someone local.

Programme sites are schools, homes, and workplaces. Hosting a volunteer costs staff time and community patience that nobody in the community asked to spend, and the work that most needs doing is almost always work someone local should be paid to do. The roles we do need help with are the ones that are genuinely scarce in the places we work from.

Translation and editorial review

Reviewing Field Notes, annual reviews, and partnership agreements in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Kiswahili, or Nepali. Agreements in particular must read as clearly to a village council as to a lawyer.

Commitment: Approximately 6 hours a month
Location: Remote
What it needs: Professional or near-professional fluency
Comfort querying our English, not only translating it

Data review and methodology critique

Reading our published figures against their stated methods and telling us where the two do not match. This role exists because of the 2022 restatement.

Commitment: Approximately 8 hours a quarter
Location: Remote
What it needs: Statistics, audit, or evaluation background
A willingness to be unwelcome

Civil and water engineering review

Second-opinion review of infrastructure designs, with particular attention to whether a specified component can actually be bought and repaired near the site.

Commitment: Variable, project-based
Location: Remote, with occasional scheduled site visits
What it needs: Chartered or equivalent standing
Experience of low-resource maintenance environments

Supporter correspondence

Answering questions from supporters about the annual review, our methodology, and where their money goes — accurately, and without smoothing anything over.

Commitment: Approximately 4 hours a month
Location: Remote
What it needs: Patience with detail
No fundraising background required, and arguably better without one

We reply to every enquiry, usually within a fortnight, and we say no more often than yes — most commonly because the role is already filled for the year.
